Houston Consumer Bankruptcy Lawyer

Consumer bankruptcy (Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy) offers individuals an opportunity to start over. Whether you are indebted because of losing your job, having your work hours or pay cut, experiencing an unforeseen medical condition, or being overwhelmed by credit card debt, we can help.

Located in Houston, the Sughrue Law Firm* has helped hundreds of individuals in financial trouble get back on their feet. We are different from many of the bankruptcy mills who just want to churn out a bankruptcy and treat you like a number rather than a client.

We treat you with respect and take the time to listen. We also recommend bankruptcy only as a last resort. First, we explore alternatives to bankruptcy to see if you would benefit more from avoiding bankruptcy.

What Is Chapter 7 Bankruptcy?

You must meet certain requirements to qualify for Chapter 7 bankruptcy relief. Chapter 7 essentially allows you to retain certain property and place any remaining property in a pool to be shared by your unsecured creditors (such as most credit card and medical debt). After a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, all of your unsecured debt is eliminated, and you begin with a fresh start.

For more information about Chapter 7 bankruptcy or to see if you qualify, please Contact Us for a free, confidential consultation.

What Is Chapter 13 Bankruptcy?

A Chapter 13 bankruptcy allows you to reorganize your debt. You can restructure some existing debt and often eliminate some of your debt. Basically, a Chapter 13 bankruptcy allows you to pay off creditors over three to five years.

If you are trying to avoid a foreclosure, a Chapter 13 bankruptcy may be one solution. Of course, as previously stated, we will look for alternatives to bankruptcy. However, a Chapter 13 bankruptcy often is utilized during a home foreclosure or repossession when you want to keep the property. In many cases, we can obtain reduced payments for you.

To determine if a Chapter 13 bankruptcy is right for you, please Contact Us for a free, confidential consultation.
